For the Book Arts elective the brief was to explore book structures by choosing to interpret one of three texts. I chose Alice In Wonderland. I had been exploring the names of paint colours for my work in Unit 2.3 Design and Rhetoric so I decided to extend the ideas I had been looking at and use colour swatches to interpret characters and concepts from the narrative. I chose to work with Farrow and Ball Paint charts as they had a balanced range of traditional colours and were known for their unusual names. This allowed me to layer meaning on to the colours through the names. I created two variants of the idea for the output of the elective. A concertina book which mimicked a paint chart, presenting the colours as if they were really named after characters from Alice in Wonderland and a case bound book which presented the colours almost like specimens as you would find in a Victorian botany book.
