Right at the end of 2011 Commonplace at the University of the Arts London launched a joint competition with cycle jersey design company Milltag, to invite students to submit designs for a jersey based on the theme of London in celebration of the London 2012 Olympics and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee this year. The winner and runners-up were announced in April and to celebrate all of the work by the students Milltag and UAL are holding an exhibition of the designs at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design this week. My design, which was one of the runners-up will be on show, with jersey’s available to buy at a discount alongside prints of the design. Amazingly my concept took a departure from my work on colour, to focus on mapping and contours. However, the winning design featured a striking pattern based on the colour palette of the tube map and one of the other runners-up created a design based around blocks of colour typical to London. I will be taking some photos at the exhibition so should be able to post some of the other designs after the event. There is a private view for the exhibition on Thursday 27th September from 6-8pm. I’m told there will be beer. The exhibition is also running during the day as part of a cycling event hosted by CSM, for full details of the location, see the flyer below.
